I hear this distinction all the time, especially from my mother and other Presbyterians. I understand the reasoning behind the distinction, that Presbyterians believe rather strongly in a "priesthood of believers," which is the reason we pass the communion plates to each other instead of lining up to receive it from a man in robes at the front of the church. I bristle at the distinction, though, and hold to the less accepted but still correct definition that a priest is the head of a religious body who is ordained and allowed to perform rites (see The American Heritage Dictionary, a good stodgy reference if ever there was one). A Jewish rabbi or Muslim cleric are types of priests, although I doubt you'd ever hear the end of it if you called them as much. Keeping with that, I consulted with my grandfather on this-- himself an elder in my home church and the author of two dictionaries-- and he said that while I was technically correct, the purpose of language was communication and I was therefore speaking Aramaic for most people when referring to a non-Catholic/Anglican/Eastern Orthodox figure in such a way.

So I'm right (albeit a bit of a dick), and you're right! What a beautiful world!

This is interesting...Presbyterians do not have Priests - they have Ministers. I know, I am a Presbyterian. Big difference between Priest and Minister.
